I haven't waxed politic in a long time, but I needed to say this.

There's various reasons for what happened Tuesday night. Voters, especially "minorities" (I hate using that word nowadays, since no race is in the majority anymore) showed up to vote in record numbers, for the 2nd presidential race in a row. The right-wing pundits could only stare in shock (and in many cases, have nothing short of apoplectic fits) as everything they thought they knew about the election crumbled to dust. Even electoral-vote.com, which amalgamted numerous polls to predict the race, and were right on the dot in 2008, underestimated Obama's margin of victory by 29 electoral votes (they called FL for Romney on Monday).

So how did this amazing victory for the Democrats happen?

1) Mitt Romney was the face of evil. I don't mean just personally, I mean across the majority of the country. He was the smirking bastard who fired you, instead of Obama's inspiring pep-talking coach. As far as the public was concerned, both candidates weren't really running so much on their performance over the last few years, as they were running on their first impressions. It was really 2008 Obama (with more "balls" to fight back, as it were) vs. 1990s Romney for most people. No contest.

2) The right-wing media honestly thought they had a chance. No, they honestly thought they'd have a LANDSLIDE! With all the poll data, it seems strange to think they'd think that, but in reality, they were kept in a bubble created by their own kind. They only paid attention to sources like Fox News, Rasmussen, UnskewedPolls.com (which is SO mistakenly named it's ridiculous), Conservative Talk Radio, Dick Morris, Donald Trump…and even those sources were only getting their news from each other! They said the "mainstream" polls were "skewed" Democrat (despite being correct almost 100% of the time in the past, and actually, they likely UNDERsampled Democrats this year). The right-winged media was sealed tighter than a Scientologist's home from outside information. This is why they panicked so hard this year, unlike any reaction we ever saw from them in 1992, 1996, 2006 (when Dems took both houses for 4 years), or 2008. The numbers Obama got for electoral vote, they had predicted for Romney. Basically, there was reality, and then there was right-winged media.

3) And this goes back to (1): Because Romney was so perceived as he was, people came out from the left in record numbers to vote. That effect was even seen here right in the apartment I live in (which was a polling place). Tak and I noticed numerous people-- some who came as immigrants, some who had lived here from the start and gone without voting their entire lives-- come out to vote for the first time simply because ROMNEY NEEDED TO BE STOPPED! However, the perception of "big money" Romney was only part of the issue, as yes, the Republicans have an image problem of not caring about the "lower" clases of people, and that leads to…

4) The Republicans' BIG problem. It's not their money. It's not their success. It's not even really their conservativism per se. It's their officially-sanctioned BIGOTRY. Deep-seated, brain-piercing, dyed-in-the-wool party BIGOTRY! The Republicans' official party platform states that being gay (like me) shouldn't be a protected class like race and shouldn't be allowed to marry. The Republicans' official party platform says no to all abortion, but then also says no to any form of birth control, because they think sex should only be for procreation. The Republicans' official party platform then also proceeds to say they're for smaller government. Sorry, telling me who I should love, telling me who I should marry, telling me when I should have sex and for why… that's not smaller government. It's not even *really* conservative. Not really. conservativism is leaving well enough alone: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. conservativism is only allocating those resources that are fundamentally needed. Granted, I do have issues with the way some of that is applied (like privatizing medical care, police, fire, etc), but that's still what *true* conservativism is. Allocating resources toward making sure people don't do actions that don't affect anyone else negatively (like all the money spent on MN's "Vote YES" campaign) is NOT conservative.

Their bigotry was most defined by yesterday's Rush Limbaugh show. In one segment, he lamented that ethnic voters didn't like the ethnic politicians on the Republican ticket. He basically ranted in this segment, talking about Condi Rice, and Mia Love, and Suzanne Martinez, and Marco Rubio. All I got from Rush's rant is that he was basically saying "we have minorities now! Why don't you love us?" The fact that he actually thought the mere presence of ethnic people on the ticket would make that demographic love the Republicans shows just how out of touch he, and by likely extension the Republican Party itself, are. That's a stark example of the deep-rooted bigotry that will continue to plague the Republicans for years to come.

The kind of neo-"conservativism" the Republicans currently represent is in actuality religious in nature. They don't like gays because their religion thinks it's icky. They don't like pre-marital sex because they think it's a sin. In fact, the official Republican party platform also says… they want to enshrine "Christian values" into law.

In this country, religion is supposed to stay out of politics by Constitutional edict. Religious statements shouldn't be in *any* party platform in this country, and that's where the bigotry comes from. And because among most Republicans, their faith is everything to them, it's not likely to change anytime soon. As time passes, and the Internet makes communication with many different types of people easier, this bigotry will fade more among the populace, and the number of people that support the current Republican platform will dwindle more and more with each passing year. It's simply social physics, and there is no stopping it short of a global EMP to kill the Internet.

You want to vote conservative? Vote Libertarian. Seriously. Conservativism in and of itself isn't necessarily a bad thing. Liberalism in and of itself isn't always a good thing either (see the recent fiasco surrounding Buckyballs for an example of hyper-liberalism), and it's the Libertarians who are only as far right as the Democrats are left. The actual polar opposite of the current Republican party right now… is the Green Party.

So how can the Republicans keep from fading into eventual obscurity? They have to let go of religion. Full stop. They have to take it out of their party platforms, and everything that stems from that. Stop hating on gays. Stop hating on sex. Stop trying to ban abortion. Stop hating on drugs. Rush Limbaugh was wondering also on yesterday's show if the Republican Party needs to just accept these and change their stance. My reply in a word: YES! They've done it before on other issues in the last 150+ years, and it needs to be done again.

Basically, Republicans need to TRULY start being conservative. Yes, they'd lose the Tea Party base, but they NEED to right now. In return, they'd gain the Libertarians, and then maybe we can REALLY start getting some reform done.

Okay, I think this rant is over.

It's not because of his views. Many of them can be pretty crass, especially regarding his view of (mostly SoCal) women.

It's not because of anything in "Leykis 101". That's basically a step-by-step guide to being successful (i.e., getting laid) via being an asshole, and Tom would be the first to tell you that.

No, it's because of where and how his show is airing.

Tom Leykis used to be on terrestrial radio. First he was on one local station after another in the 1980s and early 1990s before getting his syndicated show in 1994, a show which, at its distribution peak (1996), had over 225 affiliates (though only a handful aired him live). He was wildly popular, especially on the west coast. He got over a quarter-million listeners between his affiliates for years on end.

Then his flagship station, KLSX, decided to switch formats, effectively rendering his show on hiatus, and his contract prevented him from putting on another show for just over 3 years.

Well, this month, his show came back, on the streamcast/podcast network he created in 2010, the New Normal Network. No affiliates needed, no flagship station needed, just a studio in Burbank with him, Gary, Dino, and Art. He has full creative and distributive control over his show now, and answers to no one else but himself...

...and terrestrial radio is running scared. His former employer, CBS, has blocked his website on their local LAN. CBS has just *now* started to file copyright complaints against Leykis clips posted to YouTube. Why are they running scared?

In the first week of the new show, Leykis didn't get a quarter-million listeners, he got over 400,000! Yeah. Listening from all over the world! He even got a call from Uganda! Ever since he announced those numbers, he says his sales line has been ringing off the hook, and new advertisers are signing up almost every day!

Some may say T.D. Mischke was the first to do this, but he actually went back to radio as soon as WCCO gave him an offer. Leykis got offers from terrestrial radio as well, but he turned them down, saying he could make as much money hosting the show on the 'net himself, without having to worry about program managers, general managers, community standards, anything like that! And so far, Leykis is proving himself right. It's his big "fuck you" to terrestrial! He's doing it HIS way, with HIS crew, on HIS dime, and it works!

He says other big radio names are watching his empire too, for when the clusterfuck that is the terrestrial radio business ends up stabbing the knife into THEIR backs, and the business WILL at some point, as things get more homogenized, and more costs need to be cut.

The New Normal Network is very aptly named, as it *is* the future of what we will consider "normal" media. And right now, Tom Leykis is leading the charge! Expect other big names to follow suit once their contracts run out, they see how successful New Normal Network is, and they decide they want a piece of that autonomous pie!

And because a big radio name can't become one without fans, we can thank the loyal cadre of fans that requested, "Blow me up, Tom!!!" :)

I'll be very blunt and very honest...

If you like any form of modern music, any at all, thank Dick Clark. Seriously. Without him, Rock would not have gotten popular acceptance, R&B wouldn't have gotten popular acceptance, and any form of music that has branched from those genres would never have existed.

There are those who would give Ed Sullivan part of that credit as well, but Ed Sullivan simply presented music acts. Dick Clark showed us that the average person could enjoy the music, could dance to it, and didn't have to feel ashamed about being a fan of Rock or R&B, forms of music that in 1957, were still being seen as shocking, rebellious, for "other" people. Dick Clark took those forms of music and told mainstream America it was okay. No, more than okay, it was great!

And Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" continued to preside over all the genres, sub-genres, and tangents that followed until 1989. He showed us folk rock, acid rock, funk, punk, disco, new romantic, new wave, and saw the talent in each song that played on the show. He never graded a song as completely good or bad, staying as neutral as a good DJ should.

...and he made us like it!

There were those who followed in Clark's shoes, from Casey Kasem in the 1970s, to Rick Dees in the 1980s, to Ryan Seacrest in the 21st Century, but as close as anyone came to him, no one could touch him.

Dick Clark always had his pulse on the youth of America, and it was more than his looks that earned him the title "The World's Oldest Teenager". He was always open to anything new, for he believed that as soon as you started closing yourself off to it, was when you truly started getting "old". It's a philosophy I follow myself, and that I try to urge others to follow as well.

I know Dick Clark did far more than just be a music presenter, but it was in music that he had the most profound influence on American culture, and IMHO, everyone from Bill Haley to Lady Gaga, and all their fans over the decades, and all the music acts yet to come, corporate or independent, owe him a deep gratitude.

Dick Clark said it was okay to be into good music. Dick Clark said it was okay to be into different music. Dick Clark said it was okay to be into socially-sensitive music...

...Dick Clark said it was okay to be into MUSIC. Period.

And for that, he will always be one of my greatest inspirations.

Thank you, Dick Clark. You will be missed.

I just finished reading a discussion on Slashdot regarding voting third-party, how you should vote your conscience and not just settle for 'the lesser of two evils'.

Problem right now is: doing just that is very dangerous in a world where one of the major parties has gone batshit insane.

Yes, the GOP is the party of the batshit insane right now. There's no getting around that fact. The people left in the race on that side include:

NEWT GINGRICH - Who keeps talking about the 'sanctity of marriage' when he's been known to throw away wives out of convenience, like when he infamously divorced one wife while she was DYING IN THE HOSPITAL!

RON PAUL - who seemed like a ray of light in the party back in 2008, but we know more about him now, and about his sexist, racist beliefs. That's not what we want in a President.

RICK SANTORUM - The nuttiest of the bunch, who for all intents and purposes would institute a Judeo-Christian theocracy if he had his way.

MITT ROMNEY - The corporate shill of the group. The least nutty of them, but that's not saying much. The man who signed what we now know as "Obamacare" into law in Massachusetts, but is now speaking against it. Imagine that.

And on the Democrat side we have Barack Obama. Yeah, he wasn't quite the hope beacon he campaigned as, and he signed the law that (technically anyway) allows KGB-style "diappearances", but on his watch, Bin Laden is no longer a threat, Gathafi is no longer a threat, we're out of Iraq, we're likely soon to be out of Afghanistan, and he signed a tax raise on the rich.

I'm sure some of the more centrist or conservative people on my LJ or FB can think of other bad stuff Obama did too...but is it really worse than what's on the GOP's current platform?

I'm tangenting, I know...back to the main point.

The fact of the matter is, the liberals and progressives need to unite on a common party right now, more than ever.

In a strictly 2-party race, progressives will overwhelmingly vote Democrat.

The smartest people of this country tend to be progressive.

Progressives will be the ONLY ones to even CONSIDER a third-party.

The way society is right now, there is no way the average person will consider a third-party, no matter how much you talk to them, no matter how much you cajole to them. All the average person cares about in society is what's "popular", and unless the candidate has a "D" or "R" after their name, the candidate doesn't show up on the average person's television-infused, pop-culture-surfing, mainstream-media watching/reading radar.

This is why most third parties tend to only take votes away form the Democrats.
The only exception is when there's a third party that's even more batshit insane than the GOP, and that's not happening this year. The GOP has now *become* that further-right party. The GOP is the party of "don't think, let Jesus think for you" now, and there's no way anyone in that camp would EVER vote for a Democrat, or even a sensible third party. They're simply too stupid to see beyond their religion and Fox News. Yeah, I went there.

So trust me, as much as I would LOVE to vote for Roseanne Barr (yes, she's running on a progressive pro-feminist liberal platform), I can't. This is not the time for third parties right now. The time will come when the GOP splits into two, and it *will* at some point, mark my words. There are some in the party who are getting sick of the "Tea Party" revolution, including the founder of the Tea Party, who now says his movement has morphed into something he no longer wants anything to do with... Other notables include former VP Dick Cheney, who says they need to stop with the anti-gay agenda, and former MN governor Arne Carlsson, who actually threw his support behind Obama in 2008, and was subsequently banned from speaking at future GOP functions.

So this is why we can't vote third-party this year. All it will do is take votes away from the liberals, who have been instrumental time and again on furthering civil rights, because the only people who would vote for a more progressive party, are people who wouldn't be voting GOP anyway.

I notice pretty much the only things I post to my LJ any more are playlists for Revenge and DT20. Almost all of my actual blogging has been done on my Facebook. It used to be the longer entries would still get posted here, but now that I've been x-posting them to FB "Messages", I think it's time for me to admit that now, after over 10 years of LJ use, FB is now my primary soapbox, so to speak.

Does this mean I'm leaving LJ entirely? No, it just means you'll see less posts from me. Starting in 2012, the playlist postings will move to FB. The final playlist you'll see posted to my LJ will be the DT20 Top 50 of 2011.

I will still continue to use LJ for the following:
• Reading/commenting on friends' posts
• Posting longer original rants/writings (which will be x-posted from FB)
• Posting 'DJ Particle' news to LJ communities

Basically, my LJ will be more personal, and as such I will be removing the LJ widget from my website. All future 'DJ Particle' news will be Facebook or Community-only starting 1/1/12.

For those who don't like using FB, the "Less Than [X] Hours Left" posts reminding people to vote in the DT20 will move to the "dementiaradio" LJ Community. Playlists for my shows can also be found on my own website and MadMusic.com

However, if you do like Facebook, and haven't friended me yet, you can personally "friend" me here and/or professionally "like" me here. :) If you friend me though, let me know who you are on FB so I have an idea who you are.

Thanks! :)
